Among many recent successes, Grant Writer Source helped the Emilio Nares Foundation secure a $150,000 grant from the Lance Armstrong Foundation to launch a patient transportation program. The Ride With Emilio program ensures that sick children access weekly chemotherapy and other crucial medical appointments when their families lack personal transportation and public transportation is not adequate. The Ride With Emilio program serves approximately 20 families each week, or five children each day!

Prior to the Ride With Emilio program, the Children's Hospital San Diego Hematology/Oncology Department estimated an average of four missed appointments each day related to transportation challenges, delaying treatment for children and reducing their best chances of survivability. To date, the Emilio Nares Foundation is pleased to report that no patient has missed an appointment or experienced treatment delays due to transportation-related problems since the launch of Ride With Emilio.

The Emilio Nares Foundation is named in honor of Emilio Nares, the 5-year-old son of Diane and Richard Nares, who lost his courageous battle with cancer in 2000. During that time, the Nares' were unable to find a suitable bone marrow match for their son, which greatly decreased his chances for survival. In addition, the Nares' realized first-hand what little resources exist to support the immediate needs of children and families who are coping with cancer, particularly those with little resources of their own.

Diane and Richard founded the Emilio Nares Foundation in 2003. The Foundation's mission is to secure the best possible treatment and highest quality of life for children afflicted with cancer, with an emphasis on underserved patient families. The Emilio Nares Foundation provides logistical, emotional, and financial support to patients and their families, and improves the availability of and access to cancer care systems within the community and hospitals. To date, the Emilio Nares Foundation has served more than 2,500 families and added nearly 4,000 new bone marrow donors to the San Diego Stem Cell Donor Center.
